Nutrition-Sensitive Programming

Under this research theme, we conduct international food system development projects in developing countries. Some of the countries we have worked in included Zambia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Bolivia, and Honduras. These projects are focused on enhancing food systems' sustainability and strengthening the capacity of stakeholders including farmers, farmer cooperatives, small-scale food enterprises, non-governmental organizations, and local governments.


Our research activities under this theme include

  • Nutrient Leakage and tracking along the food value chain
  • Environmental Nutrition mapping of different agricultural commodities within the food value chain.
  • Development of technologies to support nutrition program measurement and resilience and sustainability measurements .

Ongoing and Completed Projects Portfolios

Environmental Nutrition Tracking

Some of the projects under this research portfolio include:

(a) Sustainability tracking of nutrient and environmental impact along the value change of beans and potatoes in Senegal, Bolivia, and Nepal.

(b) Sustainability assessment of small-scale process industries in Nepal, Senegal, and Bolivia. With a special focus on fortified, biofortified and non-fortitied foods.



Sustainability, Household Processing, and Policy Implications

Some of the research under this project portfolio include:

(a) Investigating global and regional dietary pattern and exploring a shift towards sustainability through laws, policies, and advocacies

(b) Developing integrated solutions for monitoring food safety solutions in Africa

(c) Environmental-nutrition trades of household storage and processing of food.

Digital Solutions for Promoting African Food Systems

Some of the ongoing and completed projects under this research theme include:

(a) Designing digitally mediated circular bioeconomy solutions for the African food system.

(b) Developing harmonized and holistic food system resilience and sustainability tools for national, regional, and continental food system analysis.

    SCLANSA FVC in Zambia and Malawi

    The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), funded a three year project entitled "Strengthening Capacity of Local Actors in Nutrition-Sensitive Agri-Food Value Chains in Zambia and Malawi"


    The project’s main objective is to promote accessibility and consumption of diverse, safe nutritious food to improved household nutrition. The target beneficiaries were men and women of reproductive age (15-49 years) with children (6-59 months).

    Promotion of rural development in Honduras

    This project was sponsored by Global Affairs Canada in collaboration with Swiss Contact. The objective was to promote rural economic development in the dry corridor of Honduras through sustainability assessment on selected fruits value chain.


    The main project activities focused on conducting value chain analysis, capacity building and business partnership for development and improvement in the current production of selected fruit processing companies. Value chain assessed include Cashew, Mango and Orange

    Friendly Metrics and Technologies for Better Results in NSA Projects

    The overall goal of the project is to enhance evidence-based management decision making on Nutrition Sensitive programming through the development and implementation of project friendly metrics and technologies evidence-based management decisions on Nutrition Sensitive programming.


    The beneficiary countries in the project were Ethiopia, Zambiam, Bolivia and Laos. The main project components include (a) Defining impact pathways and related sets of metrics and (b) development of a food photo-documentation database
